Part 5 - The Physical Toll of Sleepless Nights—And What to Do About It

May 29, 2025

You’ve been doing everything right—taking care of your family, working hard, giving back, maybe even making time for doctor visits and health checkups when you can. On the outside, life looks good. But lately, the nights have been long, and the sleep has been short.

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. In fact, many community leaders are finding themselves up at night, tired but unable to sleep.

And it’s not just about getting older, or needing to cut back on caffeine. It’s deeper than that. Our bodies are trying to tell us something. And the longer we ignore it, the more it takes a toll.

We’re Tired—But Not Just Physically

Sleep issues often get brushed off, especially by people who are used to pushing through and showing up no matter what. This kind of tired is emotional, mental, and even spiritual. It’s the kind of tired that doesn’t go away with eight hours of sleep.

At SelfSync Financial Wellness we call it “soul tired.” It’s connected to stress, unspoken worries, and the weight of responsibility that so many Black people carry quietly.

Even if you’re doing “all the right things,” eating healthy, exercising, spiritual practices, helping your kids and grandkids, your body might be holding on to the stress you haven’t had time to process. The task might be done, but your brain and body aren’t done stressing about them.

The Physical Cost of Sleepless Nights

Our bodies keep the score, even when our minds push forward. And over time, chronic lack of sleep can start to show up in ways that are harder to ignore:

  • High blood pressure

  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Blood sugar issues

  • Pain and inflammation

  • Memory lapses

  • Low energy or burnout

  • Hormonal shifts (especially during menopause)

  • Feeling anxious or down, even when things are going okay

Sometimes these symptoms come out of nowhere. You might think, I thought I was taking care of myself—why is this happening? The answer is often stress. Not just the stress of doing too much, but the stress of holding too much in.

This Isn’t Just About Hormones

Yes, hormones change as we age, and that absolutely affects sleep. It’s important to make sure you ask your doctor if there is a vitamin or mineral supplement that can help. But it’s not just that. Stress, grief, frustration, even resentment, when these emotions sit in the body too long without being acknowledged or released, they show up physically.

You can take supplements, try yoga, or get massages (and those things can help)—but none of them will fully work if the underlying stress isn’t addressed. The stress you endure will keep you up at night and cause your body to suffer long term.

Three Shifts That Can Help

You don’t have to overhaul your whole life. But you do need to slow down long enough to listen to your body. Here are three ways to start:

  1. Treat Sleep Like Healing, Not Just Rest
Don’t wait until you’re exhausted to get rest. Create a wind-down routine that honors your body’s need to recover from the day; mentally, physically, and emotionally. That might mean getting off the phone earlier, saying no without guilt, turning off the news, or sitting and listening to the 5-Most Powerful Sleep Mantras for a few minutes before bed.
  2. Let Go of What’s Not Yours to Carry
Ask yourself: Whose stress am I carrying? You can’t fix everything for everyone. Remember the best thing you can do is focus on how you Control the Controllable. Sometimes, love means setting boundaries. Give yourself permission to put your own peace first.
  3. Talk to Someone Who Gets It
If you’ve tried everything and still feel out of alignment, you don’t need another wellness trend. You need a space to be heard. That’s what Session 0 is—an opportunity to pause, reflect, and begin to process what’s really behind the sleepless nights. Session 0 will give you a chance to feel heard. To feel what everyone else experiences when they come to you. You take care of so many people, now it’s time for you to be taken care of. [Link to schedule or learn more.]

Your Rest Is Sacred

We’ve been taught to keep going. To work harder. To be strong. But true strength also means knowing when to pause. Chronic sleep issues are not just an inconvenience—they’re your body’s way of saying: something needs attention.

Let’s stop dismissing the signs.

You don’t need to push through. You need to let go. But how do you do that when you are so in the habit of taking care of everything. Start with trying one of the options above, but also ask your doctor to look deeper at that thing they keep saying is common with aging. You don’t have to be in pain and you don’t have to be ill. Finding peace will help your body heal.

Your body is speaking. It’s time for you to listen and take action.
