Who Gets to Stay? Chicago’s Neighborhoods Are Worth Fighting For

Oct 07, 2026
We need to talk about what's happening to our city.

Developers and real estate agencies from out of state are coming to Chicago in growing numbers. New York firms in particular have taken notice of us. We've seen what happened to New York. New York natives there were priced out of the neighborhoods they built, and the city lost something it can't get back. I don't want that for Chicago.

Our Black and Brown neighborhoods are feeling this first. Families who have been here for generations are being pushed out, and too many of our aldermen are standing by or helping it along. Zoning changes, land deals, and development approvals all cross their desks. Those decisions shape who gets to stay.

So pay attention. Know who your alderman is. Show up to ward meetings. Ask who a new development is for and who it leaves behind. Ask where their campaign money comes from. Vote like your block depends on it, because it does.

Chicago belongs to the people who live here. Let's make sure it stays that way.
