We Need to Talk About What's Happening to Our Black Businesses

CHICAGO, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING TO OUR BLACK BUSINESSES ON THE SOUTH SIDE.Over the last year, we have watched restaurant after restaurant and business after business get their windows smashed, doors broken, registers stolen and property vandalized. AGENDA Maybe?
And some of these places have been hit MORE THAN ONCE.
LOOK AT THIS LIST:
Brown Sugar Bakery — 2 break-ins
Stussy’s Diner — broken into / vandalized
Brûlée Chicago — window smashed, register/ATM stolen
Soul Vegan — broken into / vandalized
Sip & Savor — multiple break-ins
Shawn Michelle’s Homemade Ice Cream — broken into
Dawn A.M. Eatery — broken into
Chatham Cleaners — broken into
Paris Cleaners in Chatham — broken into
Soul Vibez — Fab says her restaurants have been targeted 3 TIMES
Bronzeville Soul — broken into
Peach’s Restaurant — hit in the same Bronzeville spreeAND THIS STILL ISN’T EVERYBODY.
Chicago, we cannot talk about investing in and revitalizing the South Side while the very business owners investing in our communities are becoming targets.
Our communities NEED them. Our communities WANT them.
And it’s simply not fair for entrepreneurs to pour their time, energy, money and dreams into our neighborhoods, only to become victims of repeated break-ins and burglaries.
WHAT IS THE PLAN TO PROTECT OUR SOUTH SIDE BUSINESSES?
