Voices of the South Side: A Spotlight at the Black Harvest Film Festival

Oct 29, 2025

Every November, Chicago becomes the epicenter of Black storytelling when the Black Harvest Film Festival takes over the Gene Siskel Film Center. Now celebrating its 30th year, the festival continues to amplify stories of the African diaspora—films that challenge, inspire, and celebrate the richness of Black life.

This year’s lineup includes a powerful showcase from the Community Film Workshop of Chicago (CFWC) titled “Voices of the South Side.” The program, screening on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 11 AM at the Gene Siskel Film Center (164 N. State St.), features twelve short films created by emerging Chicago filmmakers who capture the resilience, creativity, and truth of South Side life.

From stories of love and loss to self-discovery and redemption, Voices of the South Side brings a mosaic of perspectives to the screen:

🎬 “Gemini”Alphonso Echols Jr.
🎬 “Too Full”Amber Johnson
🎬 “I’m Sorry”Hakeem Kamau
🎬 “Be Grateful”Jay Deep
🎬 “Ad Free Listening”Jonathan Ize-Iyamu
🎬 “Unwritten”Kathryn Robinson
🎬 “Sine Amour”Paul Haymon
🎬 “Beyond Words”R. Carolyn Peet
🎬 “The Baby Girl”Sandria Washington
🎬 “Day One”Terryannah Caldwell
🎬 “Eve’s Denial”Tiara B. Crosby
🎬 “Black & Blue”Valerie Goodloe

Each short film shines a light on Chicago’s South Side—the triumphs, the tensions, the laughter, and the layered humanity that often goes unseen. Produced in partnership with the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, the Gene Siskel Film Center, and the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), this showcase is part of a long tradition of nurturing local talent through CFW’s training and mentorship programs.

The Black Harvest Film Festival isn’t just about watching films—it’s about recognizing the filmmakers who turn everyday life into art, reflection, and movement. And Voices of the South Side is a reminder that our stories—told through our own lenses—will always matter.
