Soul Ramen Chicago Opens to Sold-Out Crowd,

First-of-its-kind ramen concept brings Afro-diasporic flavor and neighborhood
revitalization to Bronzeville

Soul Ramen Chicago, the
Midwest's first Black woman-owned ramen bar, opened its doors this Juneteenth weekend to a sold-out crowd at 39th Street and Rhodes Avenue, drawing lines out the door for its debut in historic Bronzeville Chicago.

Founded by Airian McDuffy — a powerhouse Chicagoland realtor turned restaurateur — Soul Ramen blends the comfort and tradition of Afro-diasporic foods with the artistry of traditional ramen, creating a dining experience rooted in culture as much as cuisine. The two-year journey to opening night culminated in a space that doubles as a community gathering point: vibrant bowls in yellow and topaz adorn the walls lined with art and tributes to Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, while chopstick-and-bowl light fixtures turn the dining room itself into a piece of the story.

“Soul Ramen is proof that you can honor where you come from and still try something
completely new. This isn’t just a restaurant opening — it’s a community claiming its own table,”
said McDuffie.

The opening is backed by a $250,000 Community Development Grant from the City of Chicago,
awarded to support the transformation of a long-vacant commercial property into a vibrant
dining destination and community gathering space. The project reflects the city’s broader
investment strategy on the South Side — turning vacancy into opportunity, and entrepreneurship
into neighborhood revitalization.

Soul Ramen Chicago is the first solely Black woman-owned ramen bar in Chicago and the
Midwest, and the second in the nation. “Two years ago this was just an idea. Today it’s the first of its kind in the Midwest. I want every little girl on this block to see this and know she can build something too,” McDuffie said.
