Reimagining Bronzeville, One Path at a Time

Apr 01, 2026

The Bronzeville Trail is a transformative community-driven project focused on turning an abandoned rail line on Chicago’s South Side into a vibrant, multi-use trail for walking, biking, and gathering. The effort is led by the Bronzeville Trail Task Force, a nonprofit committed to creating a space that promotes health, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation.

More than just a trail, the project is designed to honor the history of Bronzeville—particularly the legacy of Black laborers and families connected to the former Kenwood rail line during the Great Migration. Through research, storytelling, and community engagement, the initiative seeks to bring those untold stories to life while shaping the future of the neighborhood.

Stretching roughly two miles from 40th and Dearborn to 41st and Lake Park, the trail aims to connect residents to each other and to the lakefront, while creating opportunities for recreation, economic development, and cultural expression.

At its core, the Bronzeville Trail is about more than infrastructure—it’s about building a space that reflects the community’s past, supports its present, and creates new possibilities for its future.
