Redesigning Your Retirement: It’s Never Too Late to Make It Yours

Sep 10, 2025

What was your original plan? Take a moment and think back. Maybe it was more of a feeling than a concrete roadmap, but you knew what it would feel like when you “made it.” You pictured the work you’d do, the places you’d visit, the people you’d meet, and those who would know your name. Just thinking about it brought a certain thrill, a sense of possibility that made you proud, even if only for a moment.

Then life happened. You shifted your focus to more urgent matters like; bills, family obligations, career demands, and the endless “to-dos” that came with adulthood. Somewhere along the way, that feeling of possibility faded. You may have set your retirement plan on “set it and forget it,” or maybe you simply forgot it and never revisited it.

How do you feel now? Are you where you thought you’d be? Do you feel the sense of accomplishment you imagined in those younger years?

If not, know that it’s never too late to feel like you’ve made it.

Some people think about retirement when they start a new job, filling out the paperwork and then don’t give it much thought after that. Others begin considering it when the daily grind becomes exhausting. And some avoid thinking about it altogether, paralyzed by fear or uncertainty, unsure how they would even begin. Many small business owners find themselves working instead of retirement, some of which may not have started their business until retirement.

Wherever you are in your journey, that original spark, the desire to create a fulfilling future, still matters. Even old dreams can be revived.

The world has changed dramatically since you first imagined your retirement. Technology, healthcare, travel, and even work itself have shifted in ways that make opportunities more accessible than ever before. Yes, you may have aches and pains, and yes, some things feel harder than they once did, but that doesn’t mean your retirement can’t be vibrant, adventurous, and deeply satisfying. Your vision of “making it” can evolve, and sometimes, the updated version can be even more rewarding than what you originally imagined.

Your retirement doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It doesn’t have to follow the “perfect plan” that society or your younger self imagined. Maybe you once pictured sitting on a beach somewhere, cocktail in hand, every day the same blissful routine. Maybe now you realize your joy comes from connection, creativity, or adventure. You can start hiking new trails, learning a new skill, mentoring younger people, or even starting a small business. Redesigning your retirement is not about abandoning your dreams, nor is it about trying to make them come true. It’s about updating them to fit the life you truly want today, with all the experiences, people, and possibilities that make it meaningful.

Fear often gets in the way. Fear of running out of money, fear of change, fear of taking risks. Is your fear stronger than your desire? It’s not stronger than the longing you had when you first imagined a life you’d be proud of. You deserve more than fear, you deserve the chance to feel that excitement again, to reconnect with the feeling of possibility that your younger self carried.

So how do you begin? Start by asking yourself three questions:

  1. What did I imagine my retirement would feel like when I was younger? Don’t censor yourself. Let yourself remember the joy, excitement, and freedom you once pictured. Even if you don’t think you can execute on it, allow yourself to remember it.
  2. What has changed? The world is different now, and so are you. Consider your health, finances, lifestyle, and relationships. How do these changes open doors you couldn’t see before?
  3. What would it take to redesign my plan? This isn’t just about money, it’s about ideas, mindset, and action. What steps can you take today, this week, or this month, to move closer to your updated vision?

The answers may surprise you. Your “making it” might not look exactly like the original vision and that’s okay. Happiness isn’t about getting everything precisely the way you imagined. It’s about identifying the meaningful things that make your life rich, purposeful, and joyful. Even if your retirement looks different than you thought, it can be more fulfilling, more adventurous, and more exciting than you ever expected.

Here’s a small exercise: take a blank piece of paper and write down your “retirement wish list.” Not the practical things, not the numbers in your bank account, we can work on that next week. Today, focus on the experiences, the feelings, the milestones that would make you say, “I’ve made it.”

Start the process by finishing this sentence, the retirement I desire…

Once you finish writing, look at it critically and ask: which items are still possible? Which ones need a little redesign? And which new opportunities have appeared in the world that you didn’t see before? You may find that the impossible is actually within reach.

Your retirement is not a finish line, it’s a chapter. And the beauty of a chapter is that it can be rewritten at any point. It can include adventure, learning, creativity, generosity, travel, connection, and all the things that make you feel alive. By redesigning your retirement, you’re not admitting that your original plan failed, you’re acknowledging that life has grown, changed, and gifted you new possibilities.

Turn off CNN and turn on the Disney Channel where there’s always a happy ending. I’m kidding but what I mean is, turn off the news that stresses you out. Tune in to the channels that remind you of possibilities, of happy endings, and of life lived fully. Your ending can still be happy, maybe even happier than you imagined. Happiness is less about checking societies boxes and more about curating a life that feels meaningful to you. Whether you’re still working, thinking about retirement, or already retired, the opportunity is still there. You can still redesign your future, reconnect with your desires, and claim a retirement that feels like success—not because it looks perfect to anyone else, but because it feels right to you.

Your happy ending isn’t behind you. It’s ahead, waiting for the bold step of reimagining what “making it” means to you. And remember: it’s never too late to take that step.
