Justice After Freedom: Standing With Kevin Jackson in His Fight for Innocence
Feb 04, 2026
Greetings!
You may have heard or read about Kevin Jackson whose 2001 conviction for murder was overturned in 2024, after he’d been imprisoned for 23 years, and after several attempts to get the courts to review his case, which he insisted did not include any evidence connecting him to the shooting. Kevin Jackson's conviction overturned after 23 years of insisting he had nothing to do with murder - CBS Chicago.
In attending a weekly 10x10TOWIN organization meeting on Thursday, January 15th, COAL heard directly from Kevin Jackson and his attorney Elizabeth Bacon, learning details of the original injustice that Mr. Jackson suffered, which resulted in being wrongfully incarcerated for 23 years, and despite the good news that his wrongful conviction was overturned and he was subsequently released, further learned that Jackson is experiencing another injustice.
In cases where wrongful convictions are overturned, the aggrieved party often files for a Certificate of Innocence, which is a crucial mechanism for their legal and financial rehabilitation. However, with Mr. Jackson, the Cook County State's Attorney's has filed an objection to the court granting him a Certificate of Innocence. This is inexcusable and COAL is compelled to discuss and consider ways in which the community can support Jackson in challenging this objection and righting this egregious wrong.
COAL is honored to host Mr. Kevin Jackson and Atty Elizabeth Bacon, as guest speakers, at its February Coalition Power Breakfast, Saturday, February 7, 2026. Please join us on the 7th for what we believe is a very important conversation.
MR. KEVIN JACKSON
