Honoring Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. and Carrying the Work Forward

Today we mourn the passing of a giant, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.
This photo of Reverend Jackson with me and my daughter Alex is deeply personal. It represents legacy, responsibility, and the continuation of the work. Growing up on the South Side, his leadership wasn’t abstract — it was present. It shaped how so many of us understood our worth and our obligation to serve.
Reverend Jackson didn’t just speak about justice — he organized it. His lifelong commitment to voter registration expanded democracy and empowered generations.
That belief lives on in HB 4339 — the Jesse Jackson Sr. Voter Empowerment Bill, which I am sponsoring. This bill strengthens Illinois democracy by making voter registration a standard part of graduating high school just like receiving a diploma.
He believed every high school student should graduate with not only a diploma, but a voter registration card in hand.
And through it all, The Reverand reminded us:
“I am somebody.”
Those words still guide me.
Rest in power, Reverend Jackson. Your fight for dignity, access, and democracy continues.
