On Dec. 3, 2025, community members, survivors of the 1969 FBI and Chicago Police Department raid, and members of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party gathered on the West Side for a dedication ceremony and a candlelight vigil to honor Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton and Peoria Defense Captain Mark Clark; both were assassinated during the police raid in the wee hours of Dec. 4, 1969.

The raid was coordinated by the FBI and carried out by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office at the 2337 W. Monroe home where Hampton lived and Black Panther Party members would gather.

Before the official start of tonight’s ceremony, there was tension between organizers of the event and Black Panther Party Cub leader Fred Hampton, Jr. Shortly after, Hampton Jr. left and the ceremony continued.

Dozens of people gathered to hear from survivors of the police raid who spoke about the aftermath of it.

That apartment building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2023.

A sign with the designation was placed at the apartment building during the ceremony and will remain there.
