Dear Aunt Stacey Abrams
Nov 05, 2026
I woke up this morning thinking about Moses.
Not the part where he parted the Red Sea. But the part where he stood on that mountain, looking over a Promised Land he had spent years leading people toward, knowing he would never enter it himself.
And I wondered what that must have felt like.
To confront Pharaoh. To endure the wilderness. To carry the hopes of people who sometimes doubted you. To sacrifice so much, only to watch somebody else walk into what you had prayed for.
Then God called Joshua.
And something about that touched my spirit.
Because everybody wants to be Joshua. Everybody wants to cross over, possess the promise, and make history. But we don't talk enough about the Moseses who made the journey possible.
Aunty Stacey, when I think about you, I think about Moses. And when I think about Keisha Lance Bottoms, I think about Joshua.
Not because your journeys are identical, but because some victories are bigger than the person who gets to claim them.
You helped change what women could imagine for themselves. You challenged doors that had been closed for generations. You endured public disappointments and kept doing work that was never just about you.
And I wonder how many women are standing taller today because you refused to bow your head yesterday.
How many daughters will dream without knowing what their mothers endured? How many women will walk through doors without ever knowing whose hands helped push them open?
Aunty, thank you.
Thank you for Keisha. Thank you for our mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, cousins, and friends.
Thank you for me.
Thank you for carrying a burden that was never yours alone to carry. Thank you for getting back up. Thank you for showing us that losing a race doesn't mean losing your purpose.
And I pray you never mistake not being the one to cross over for not being part of the reason the crossing was possible.
Because the promise was never just about Moses. It was about the generations coming behind him.
And while everybody is celebrating Joshua, I wanted to stop long enough to thank Moses.
We have a way of giving people their flowers when they can no longer smell them. But I want you to have yours while you're here.
Because sometimes the greatest thing you can do with your life isn't to reach the place you dreamed of.
It's to make sure the women coming behind you don't have to fight as hard to get there.
We love you, Aunty Stacey.

Thank you
