Before “Woke” Became a Political Insult: The Black History Behind the Word

Oct 01, 2026

Before politicians turned “woke” into a culture war insult, it carried a serious warning within Black America stay alert, keep your eyes open, and recognize racism before it harms you.

In 1938, blues musician Lead Belly used “stay woke” while discussing the Scottsboro Boys nine Black teenagers falsely accused in Alabama. His warning was about surviving racial injustice, not some modern political agenda.

Today, Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, and other conservative politicians use “woke” as a catchall label to demonize anything they want their supporters to fear or reject

BLACK HISTORY.

DIVERSITY.

LGBTQ+ RIGHTS.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS.

EVEN BOOKS THAT TELL THE TRUTH.

None of those things created the original meaning of “woke.” They were later placed underneath the label as politicians expanded it into a weapon against education, equality, and uncomfortable truths.

They hijacked a Black warning about injustice, emptied it of its history, and sold it back to America as an enemy.

They didn’t fear the word “woke.”

They feared what might happen if people actually woke up.
